Some great news coming in indicates that one of our proud sons of Ghanaian descent who has distinguished himself on the world stage and have gone on to become the Current Editor-In-Chief at Vogue, Edward Enninful OBE has been awarded People Honoree at this years edition of British Fashion Council Fashion Awards, 2020.
Rather than honoring the accessories designer of the year, say, the British Fashion Council has rejigged the awards template to honor 20 people in four categories: community, creativity, environment and people, all revealed in a short film which premiered on Fashionawards.com on 3 December at 7pm GMT. The Fashion Awards is usually marked with a glittering red carpet, a gala dinner, and some after parties. This year, however, the annual celebration of the fashion industry will be a pared back affair, and the awards themselves have changed with the times, too.
British Vogue’s editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, who is being honored for his work within the fourth pillar, community, and celebrated for his contribution to diversity specifically. The September 2020 issue, which featured 20 activists on its cover, including the Manchester United footballer and food poverty campaigner Marcus Rashford, model and mental health advocate Adwoa Aboah, campaigners for the Black Lives Matter movement such as Patrisse Cullors, and those using their platforms to effect change, such as the model Joan Smalls and the actor Jesse Williams, was singled out for praise as an example of “challenging traditional perceptions of fashion media”. So too was Enninful’s appearance on the cover of Time magazine in September 2020, evidencing his position as a global change leader.
A statement from British Fashion Council reads;
PEOPLE HONOUREE: @edward_enninful is celebrated for his outstanding contribution to diversity through @britishvogue. Edward is an agent of change, holding a mirror to the industry and highlighting its shortcomings. He has put academics, thinkers, activists, front line workers and Black Girl Magic on the cover of British Vogue using the platform to challenge the traditional perceptions of fashion media.
